Wood flooring installation for Cornwall’s archive centre

Working with Midas Construction and Purcell Architects, we were tasked with designing and installing the entire main foyer wood floor and subfloor at Kresen Kernow (Cornwall Archive Centre), in addition to cladding its staircases.

Client
Cornwall Council

Project funding
£12 million

Project duration
9 months

This job was part of Cornwall Council’s £12m redevelopment project of the old derelict Redruth Brewery, transforming it into the largest Cornish archive centre in the world.

The entire flooring aspect took two to three months in the design and planning phase and a further six months on-site working on the actual wood flooring installation.

The greatest challenge of the project was working around the reclaimed cut granite flagstones which had been recovered from the original brewery site.

Working within an accuracy of 0.6mm to allow for variances in the subfloor and the granite slab height, we installed the perimeter framing around the stone before completing the rest of the floor space in the expansive foyer.

To fit the wood around the granite the team needed to recut and redress the oak on-site to ensure the height variances were accounted for. Due to the project’s complexity, we were heavily involved in the design phase to offer the architect guidance on what was possible as part of the scope of works.

Purcell Architects chose to use Danish company Junckers Flooring to supply the wood for the project, opting for a Junckers Boulevard Oak board. At 185mm wide, these boards work very well within the large scale of the room, with the lighter pigmentation of the finish giving a warming golden glow which not only ages exceptionally well but provides a lovely welcoming atmosphere to the space.

We are proud to be Cornwall’s only approved Junckers contractor, demonstrating the time and skill we take to ensure that the quality of the wood they provide is upheld in the finish of the floor.
